Jamestown 400, arrival & day 1

We arrived at Williamsburg 6/9. Bob and Daniel had "flown in" to their remote Canadian cabin and lake, that morning and far from any phone contact.


That Sat. we unpacked the van, organized our room, shopped and readied ourselves for the week ahead. Abbey needed to iron the dresses and do some last min. adjustments.

Day 1: St. John's church and the 2ND VA Convention reenactment, tour Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, drive by tour of Richmond's monuments and a quick trip to Colonial Heights, a southern suburb of Richmond.

Waiting for our turn for the seating of the 2nd VA convention reenactment. This is the first place we met up with the rest of the Christ's Church Jamestown tour. After the tour and reenactment was over the re-enactors came outside to visit. Justin was very thrilled to see George Washington, as he picked out Mr. Washington from the group of re-enactors. I guess that is what happens when a 3 yo lives with a bunch of adults. Wendy had been studying up on American history, therefore Justin had been also.




The first monument we went to see. It is very large and striking. As we came up to the monument this is what we saw. We excitedly told Justin to look at it, "do you see it"? He pointed and in a very excited voice said, "look a Suburban"!

Roger briefed us on the story of this monument. Including telling us how the top stone was placed. Many Confederate soldiers plus many of Richmond and VA's important citizens are buried at the Hollywood Cemetery.

Most of our group as Roger plays the part of traveling historian.



This is the plaque by the Confederate Memorial.

Interesting, there are many different markers of the Confederate soldiers, some very old, some very new.

Lots of walking meant lots of catch up time visiting. Stephanie, Joanna and Wendy and an empty stroller.

Dee, Abbey, Justin, Purity, Heather and Stephanie walking. It was hot but everything was interesting and the trees and foliage beautiful.

Jeremy (and William) our historian for the day. It was very interesting and informative and we were grateful for the organization of the trip and to have someone so knowledgeable along with us.







Again the trees were gorgeous and huge, many different types and some must be very old.

Our side trip to Colonial Heights. Aunt Judy and Uncle Don rescued us and brought our cord for the lap top that was left at Granny's. Thanks Aunt Judy & Uncle Don. We also got to see cousin Gordon.
